The Right Fit: When Do You Need a Filling vs. a Dental Crown?

If you have a damaged or decayed tooth, our goal at All Smiles Dental Studio is always to restore its strength, shape, and function. Depending on the extent of the damage, we will usually recommend either a dental filling or a dental crown. But how do we decide which option is right for your smile? Let’s compare the two.

Dental Fillings: The Solution for Small Damage

A filling is ideal when the decay or chip is relatively minor and affects only a small portion of the tooth. We remove the decayed tissue, clean the area, and fill the small cavity with a tooth-colored composite resin. The resin is shaped to match your tooth’s natural contours and hardened with a light. Fillings are quick, conservative, and great for intact tooth structures.

Dental Crowns: The Helmet for Weakened Teeth

If a tooth has a massive cavity, a severe fracture, or has undergone a root canal, a filling is no longer enough. If we try to place a large filling in a weak tooth, the forces of chewing can cause the entire tooth to split. A crown (often called a “cap”) is a custom-made porcelain cover that encases the entire visible portion of the tooth down to the gumline, acting like a protective helmet to distribute biting pressure safely.
