As a parent, you celebrate every milestone—the first step, the first word, and of course, the first tooth! But when should that first milestone tooth lead to a milestone dental visit? At All Smiles Dental Studio, we love welcoming our youngest patients. Our goal is to make their very first experience positive, warm, and completely stress-free.
The “First Tooth, First Birthday” Rule

Many parents are surprised to learn that dental visits should start much earlier than preschool. The golden rule recommended by dental professionals is to schedule your child’s first visit when their first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday—whichever comes first. Starting early allows us to monitor jaw development, look for early signs of baby bottle tooth decay, and get your child accustomed to the dental environment.
What Happens During the First Visit?

We keep the first visit incredibly simple and gentle. It is often called a “Happy Visit.” We typically perform a “knee-to-knee” exam where your child stays comfortably on your lap. We will:
- Gently count their teeth and check their gum health.
- Look at their bite and jaw alignment.
- Discuss teething tips, dietary habits, and proper brushing techniques for tiny mouths.
- Answer any questions you have about pacifiers, thumb-sucking, or fluoride.
Building a Foundation for Trust A positive first visit prevents dental anxiety before it ever has a chance to start. We are here to make your child look forward to the dentist!
