Dental emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. Whether it’s a sports injury resulting in a broken tooth or a sudden, severe toothache in the middle of the night, knowing what to do in the first hour can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. At All Smiles Dental Studio, we save room in our daily schedule for urgent care, but here is what you need to do before you reach our office.
Scenario 1: A Knocked-Out Adult Tooth (Time-Critical!)

If an adult tooth is completely knocked out, you must act rapidly.
- Pick it up by the crown:Never touch the sensitive tissue of the root.
- Rinse gently:Use water if it’s dirty, but do not scrub or scrape the root.
- Re-insert if possible:Gently place the tooth back into its socket and hold it in place by biting softly on a clean cloth.
- Alternatively, preserve it:If it won’t fit back in, drop the tooth into a small container of milk or saliva. Do not store it in plain tap water.
- Call us immediately:If we treat the tooth within 30 to 60 minutes, there is a very high chance it can be successfully re-implanted.
Scenario 2: A Severe, Unexplained Toothache

A sudden, intense toothache usually points to an underlying infection or nerve irritation. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm saltwater to clear away any trapped debris. Use over-the-counter pain relievers to manage comfort, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if you experience facial swelling. Never apply a pain reliever directly to the gum tissue, as this can cause chemical burns.
